
The result is a uniformly human look to all the character models, with the rather slight exception of the new "Bioderm hordes," which resemble anthropomorphic lizards and sound like the Kilrathi. Our flag is mined!The game's 40 th century setting ostensibly comes from Dynamix's old line of giant 'mech games, the names of which all ended in "siege." Like every other 'mech series, it features a mostly uninspired mythos about warring clans with names like Blood Eagle and Harbingers of Phoenix, the latter of which "believe the return of Holy Phoenix is imminent." Or something like that. Given the sheer candy-store variety of toys you have to choose from, though, it's hard to remain fuming over mileage for long.

The sheer size and hilliness of the maps, though adding panoramic coolness that distinguishes this series from the pack, work against you when you die in the field and must respawn all the way back at your base to re-equip and wait in line at the vehicle pad. The other side of the coin, of course, is that you need numerous experienced teammates with comparable frame rates. It isn't just the graphics and Wagnerian sound effects eitheryou really feel the heady rush of being part of a team trying to accomplish complex goals, and when you pull them off, the exhilaration stays with you. When you're in a game with twenty or thirty others and skiing across hilltops while crashing hover tanks, clouds of green mortar smoke, and turret-blasts thunder and splash across the landscape all around you, it seems worth it. Verily, the road of progress is paved annually with chipsets. Even on a Pentium III 550 with all the details turned down, it looks like Picasso via Rorschach and handles far worse than the original Tribes. Unhappily for some, you'll need at least an 800 MHz system to really enjoy it. Happily for all, most of the original game's personality, looks, and scope have been preserved intact and in many cases improved on. This will help your tray stay flush with your game's box top, preventing pieces inside from spilling over when storing your game.Tribes 2 is a bit like poloyou sort of need to be in the mood for it and the equipment costs a small fortune. Rather than discarding the empty frames, insert them under the vacuum tray inside your game box.
